Maxine received two LL.M. degrees in Global Criminal Law and International Human Rights Law at the University of Groningen in 2021 and 2022. Before her master’s degrees, she studied International Relations and International Organisation from 2015-2019 at the University of Groningen. During her studies, she completed an internship at the T.M.C. Asser Institute in The Hague. From 2022-2024, Maxine worked as a lecturer Public International Law at the Transboundary Legal Studies Department of the University of Groningen. She has recently joined the University of Amsterdam’s Criminal Law Section as a lecturer International and Transnational Criminal Law.
Maria is a recent graduate of the LLM in International Criminal Law at the University of Amsterdam, receiving a grade of 9.5 for her thesis on the relevance of IHL's civilian presumption in ICL. Alongside her studies, she interned with the defence team of Mr. Hashim Thaçi at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, participated in the Amsterdam Law Clinics, and represented the University in the Frits Kalshoven Competition on International Humanitarian Law. She also holds a BA with a specialization in Law from Amsterdam University College. Her academic and research interests include the intersection of international criminal and humanitarian law, legal philosophy and fair trial guarantees.
